Venezuela and the Miracle on Ice

In 1980, the US hockey team pulled off the "miracle on ice" by beating the Russians at Lake Placid. At the time , the US was going through a difficult period with Russian threats and fiascos with attempting to rescue hostages in Iran. Then the uniting power of a sport breathed new life into a depressed nation.

I thought I would never see anything like it again ... until last night.

In the final of the WBC, Venezuela beat the US in a baseball crown to take an unlikely crown. This from the country who has had a despot imprison their political leader and bully the donation of a Nobel Prize.

I can remember what it was like back in 1980, and I can certainly imagine that Venezuelans are enjoying that same feeling this morning.

Pray for peace.
